Q. What is a Fringe Festival?

A Fringe Festival is a performance event showcasing a selection of shows from small theater companies. Shows can be stand-up comics, improv, comedies, farces, poetry, storytelling, or just about anything else that you can perform. The venues can range from professional theaters to pop-up performance spaces or even on the street. Shows put on tend to be cutting edge, controversial, eclectic, low budget, and easily accessible by the public. They also tend to be short, no more than an hour.

The Edinburgh Fringe festival was the first, and is the largest fringe festival in the world. (If you want to know more about Fringe history please visit: fringefestivals.us)

Part Magic Show, Part History, Totally Amazing!

Q. I have a big screen TV and Netflix. Why should I go out and see a live show?

Because it is live! No seriously, you go to experience. It is like the difference between watching skiing or actually skiing. It doesn’t have to be skiing, fill in your favorite activity. Every live performance is a one in a lifetime experience, something you can remember forever. It is especially important to see magic live. How many times have you seen a magician on TV or YouTube and thought, “If I was only there, he wouldn’t have fooled me,” or  said, “That has to be a camera trick.” The true power of live magic as a performance art is that you can participate in the experience. And since it is live, anything can happen.

“Great stories. Lots of laughter.” Lorrie Hicks

Q. Who are you?

Raised on the Southwest side of Chicago, I got my first job in a magic shop at the age of 11 and have been perfecting my trade ever since. I graduated from the Chavez College of Manual Dexterity and Prestidigitation. I am an award winning magician and storyteller, Victorian séance reenactor, former card cheat, ex-casino surveillance, occasional author, and world-renowned magic historian. I demonstrated magic for 13 year at Chicago’s Navy Pier and performed close-up magic for 5 years at the legendary Schulien’s Restaurant. In 2001, I taught actor Will Smith sleight of hand for his portrayal of Muhammad Ali in the film, Ali.

I’ve always felt Magic was about more than just “pick a card and look I found it.”

Q. What is your show about?

It’s a little about me and my life in magic. It’s a little about my passion for the curious characters that populate the history of the art. It’s a lot about you, because if I do my job right, you’ll be left to think, talk, and wonder, that is, after you stop laughing. 1/3 is magic I’ve performed in my programs, but in an altered form, 1/3 is magic that is only in my professional work, and 1/3 has been developed specifically for this show. If you are wondering about similar shows, my biggest influence in creating this show is Ricky Jay.

At only $10, you can see the same show that corporate clients pay thousands of dollars for.
